Starting Oct. 1, most highways across the province require passenger vehicles to be fitted with winter tires. This seasonal change will remain in effect until April 30, although for routes without mountain passes or heavy snowfall, the rules lift a little earlier on March 31.

Highways Where Winter Tires Are Required

Highways%20Where%20Winter%20Tires%20Are%20Required.jpgDrivers venturing into the North, Interior, and mountain routes like the Sea to Sky should expect checkpoints and signage reminding them of the rules. On Vancouver Island, sections including the Malahat as well as highways 4, 14 and 28 are covered. Meanwhile, the Lower Mainland and parts of southeastern Vancouver Island are not included in the mandatory zones, but unpredictable weather still makes proper tires a smart investment.

Recognizing Approved Winter Tires

Recognizing%20Approved%20Winter%20Tires.jpgTo meet the provincial requirement, tires must display either the M+S marking, which stands for mud and snow, or the mountain and snowflake symbol. In addition, tread depth must measure at least 3.5 millimetres to be considered safe. Falling short of these standards could result in a $121 fine, which is an easy penalty to avoid with the right preparation.

Chains and Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicles have additional responsibilities. Starting Oct. 1, most must carry chains on B.C. routes, with signage directing when they are required. Chains are not needed on the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere they are part of keeping travel safe during the snowy season.
